San Miguel Forum brings philanthropy leaders together to explore collective impact. The inaugural San Miguel Forum took place October 7–9, 2026, in San Miguel de Allende, bringing together philanthropists, nonprofit leaders, businesses, and public-sector representatives to explore how collaboration can help scale solutions to pressing social challenges. Co-hosted by the U.S.–Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership, Hispanics in Philanthropy, CEMEFI, Spring Impact, and the Scaling Community of Practice, with financial co-sponsorship from the San Miguel Community Foundation, the gathering focused on youth employment, school dropout prevention, girls’ empowerment, water and watershed health, hospice and palliative care, and community cohesion. Ma. Laura Muñoz, Mexico Representative of BPP joined a panel discussion on the evolution of philanthropy in Mexico, alongside Gracia Goya, Ana María Sánchez Rodríguez, and Rodrigo Villar.

BPP supports the celebration of mariachi music and culture in Tecalitlán, Jalisco. The U.S.–Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership was honored to participate once again in the Festival Cultural del Mariachi “De Tecalitlán Los Sones,” held October 2–12, 2026, in Tecalitlán, Jalisco, Mexico. The eighth edition of this cultural celebration brought together mariachi performers and audiences to honor the musical traditions and heritage of the birthplace of mariachi. Beyond live performances, the festival offered cultural activities, workshops, exhibitions, and opportunities for families to connect with local traditions. BPP has supported the festival as its fiscal sponsor and long-standing partner, helping sustain a cultural tradition that strengthens community identity, celebrates Mexican heritage, and creates opportunities for local artists to share their talent with wider audiences.

Executive Director celebrates 18th anniversary leading in the Borderlands. Andy Carey recently celebrated his 18th anniversary as Executive Director of the U.S.-Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership. Since September 2008, Andy has led our organization from a startup nonprofit for 18 Border region community foundations to a dynamic binational membership organization with over 420 member institutions from academia, business and corporate partners, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and grantmaking foundations. “It is truly an honor and privilege to be a part of this organization,” says Carey, “the member network makes our impact possible, and our partners and donors provide critical financial resources for us to carry out our mission,” he added. "And we are truly blessed to have such a committed and engaged Board of Directors from both sides of the Border region guiding our work." Since joining the team, the staff of three has grown to a team of ten individuals. BPP programs have grown to include education and training, coaching and technical assistance, fiscal sponsorship services, access to the Candid Foundation directory, and the BPP newsletter. This past year, the publication of the Border Briefs provided important information to the member network and the general public related to Border dynamics, immigration, public health, education, environment, and philanthropy. Congratulations Andy!

With more than 11,000 monthly visits and over 600,000 visits to date, procapacidad.org has become an important resource for organizations seeking to strengthen their capacity and impact. BPP connects with Ciudad Juárez organizations during site visits. As part of its August activities in the Paso del Norte region, the U.S.-Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership (BPP), together with the El Paso Community Foundation, organized a series of site visits in Ciudad Juárez where nearly 30 border leaders learned from organizations advancing economic opportunity, civic engagement, and innovation. The delegation visited Ni En More, a collective that employs and trains marginalized women through sewing, design, and business skills, funded by the Mellon Foundation as a fiscal sponsor relation through BPP; Edificio Participa Juárez, a collaborative space supporting civic projects and organizations like Fundación Comunitaria de la Frontera Norte and where BPP’s sponsored Candid Foundation Directory is located and offered free of charge to the Ciudad Juarez nonprofit community, and FUNAX, a nonprofit within the Technology HUB ecosystem focused on developing technology skills and expanding opportunities in the border region. The visits provided an opportunity to strengthen relationships, learn directly from local leaders, and identify opportunities for future collaboration and philanthropic investment across the border. We thank Luis Ramírez Thomas, BPP Board member and President, Ramirez Advisors Inter-National, LLC, for his generous support for these activities.

CongratulationsNick Deychakiwsky, Senior Program Officer, C.S. Mott Foundation on your retirement. The U.S.-Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership Board of Directors and staff team extend their heartfeltcongratulationsto our dear friend, Nick Deychakiwsky, on his retirement from theC.S. Mott Foundationeffective June 30, 2026. Nick was a wonderful source of strength and support while BPP converted from a program managed by the Synergos Institute into a binational membership organization, says BPP Director, Andy Carey. On Nick’s first visit to San Diego in late 2008, he offered thoughtful advice, was patient, and helped open doors to other funders as he met with the new director and staff team. Nick encouraged participation in global philanthropy conversations including Council on Foundation activities, as well as CEMEFI in Mexico. And he shared that the C.S. Mott Foundation would accompany the new Border Philanthropy Partnership in its journey. Two years later, Nick advised BPP that continued Mott Foundation support would be contingent on matching support from Mexico sources. BPP leaders accepted the challenge, and today, half of all funding sources for BPP come from Mexico. A highlight of our relationship with Nick was an invitation he organized for BPP to attend a meeting of the C.S. Mott Foundation Board of Trustees in Flint, MI. The historic trip allowed BPP to shine before a major supporter and to highlight the need for philanthropy in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands. The Mott Foundation continued to support our work thru the 2020 administrative year. We are grateful to Nick for his tireless advocacy for our growth and sustainability, and his good humor that helped us keep perspective in this work. Nick understood that change takes time, patience, perspective, and perseverance. Enjoy your retirement, Nick. It is now your turn to enjoy your family, hobbies, music, and maybe even some travel where work did not take you. ¡Enhorabuena!

BPP participates in collaboration and social sector strengthening spaces in Mexico City.In Mexico City, we participated in the Encientro de Colaboración Ciudadana organized by CEMEFI, the Mexican Center on Philanthropy, as well as in the First National Meeting of Strengthening Organizations, held at Casa Cemefi. These events brought together organizations, networks, and social actors committed to promoting collaboration, exchanging experiences, and strengthening the institutional capacity of Mexico’s social sector. During the sessions, we reflected on the current challenges faced by civil society organizations and the importance of building strategic alliances to expand their impact and sustainability. We appreciate the invitation and the opportunity to participate in these gatherings, which allowed us to share ideas, build connections, and join efforts to continue strengthening collaborative work in support of communities and social causes across the country.

BPP welcomes Chiara Cardoletti, the new UNHCR Representative in Mexico. This week, we attended an event organized by UNHCR Mexico and COMUNIDAR in Monterrey to welcome Chiara Cardoletti, the new Representative in Mexico of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). During the meeting, participants discussed the situation of refugees and displaced persons in Mexico, as well as the challenges involved in strengthening international protection. BPP provided the graduate students with connections to leaders and organizations supporting this work, as well as access to CANDID Foundation Directory online to identify funders supportive of this work. BPP fiscal sponsor program surpasses US$20 million for Borderlands. Since 2013, the Border Philanthropy Partnership has provided fiscal sponsor services to the BPP member network. Over the past few years, the program has grown by leaps and bounds and today has surpassed the US$20 million mark in total charitable giving in the Borderlands. When the program started, gifts were largely in the US$5,000 range, but today, gifts are much larger, and 43% of the BPP network is participating, says BPP Executive Director Andy Carey. In 2025 alone, BPP distributed over US$2 million in grants between the U.S. and Mexico. What is so exciting about our program, says Guillermo Garza, BPP Board Chair, is that our giving is binational. American generosity is helping Mexico, and Mexican generosity is helping the Americans, and the giving is equally split between our two countries, says Garza. The fiscal sponsor program supports arts and culture, child services, education, environment, public health, public policy advocacy, and our newest programs are supporting the LGBTQ community in Mexico. BPP attends ribbon cutting ceremony for AINE in support of children and families dealing with neurodivergence. A little more than one year ago, a group of community leaders in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, came together to create a new organization named AINE that would support children and families dealing with neurodivergence in Northern Mexico. This new effort seeks to provide clinical and therapeutic support to children and families with neurodivergent "disorders" that are conditions where the brain develops or functions differently than what is considered typical, and common examples include Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and learning disabilities like dyslexia. Other neurodivergent conditions include Tourette syndrome, sensory processing disorders, and certain mental health conditions, with neurodivergence itself being a concept of human neurological diversity rather than a medical diagnosis. “We are so honored to support our friends at AINE,” says BPP Executive Director Andy Carey. “This new organization will be so special to the families and children they serve. Unfortunately, there are not enough resources to support families and children, and the emotional, physical and financial toll on parents and their children can at times be unbearable. Thanks to AINE, essential support and services are now underway, and we believe this effort will attract families from both sides of the Border to receive support, care, and understanding.”

Celebrating Mexican Independence across the United States. This September, Mexican consulates across the United States brought communities together to celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day with pride and tradition. In cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, New York, and beyond, consulates organized traditional “El Grito de Independencia” ceremonies, echoing the historic call that ignited Mexico’s fight for freedom in 1810. Local leaders and consular officials led the festivities, often joined by mayors, governors, and community representatives, highlighting the strong ties between Mexico and the United States. Festivities also featured folkloric dances, mariachi performances, and authentic cuisine, drawing thousands of participants. BPP proudly joined the celebrations, attending events in both San Diego and Los Angeles. These events not only honored Mexico’s rich heritage but also reinforced the strong bonds between Mexico and its diaspora, showcasing the vibrancy and cultural contributions of Mexican communities throughout the country.

BPP staff join San Diego Foundation Fundraising conference. For a second year in a row, the BPP staff team attended the San Diego Foundation 2025 Fundraising Conference. The two-day event included sector experts from across the United States and with over 1052 registered attendees, and was a great opportunity to learn, connect, network, share, and re-charge the enthusiasm for our work in the Borderlands. During the conference, staff strengthened their knowledge and refined their skills to support our growing member network, says BPP Director Andy Carey. Our operational team has grown to 10 and it is important to set aside time to come together as a team to reflect, refresh, and re-charge, and this conference allowed us to do that. And it was exciting to see so many members, partners, and allies join us at the event, added Carey. On the fun side of things, BPP won a photo contest for “most liked photo” during the conference and will be a presented a grant to support the ongoing work of BPP.

BPP welcomes San Diego Diplomacy Council International Visitors to the Borderlands. This week BPP Executive Director met with 16 members of the U.S. State Department International Visitors Program from across Latin America. The community leaders and public officials in attendance represented Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay, and the Dominican Republic. The delegation is participating in a three-week tour of the United States where they meet and engage with leaders in academia, business, government at all levels, and nonprofit organizations. This program is part of the diplomatic soft power of the United States, says Carey, and BPP is proud to support this effort. Our unique work in the Borderlands is positioned to inform how two communities, two cultures, and two nations come together to support families, communities, and countries in a collaborative and cooperative way. We’ve completed nearly 15 engagements across the Borderlands in support of the International Visitors Program and look forward to supporting many more.

On July 31, 2025, the U.S.-Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership (BPP) proudly launched its Border Briefs series during Voices and Visions from the Border: A Funder Dialogue at the San Diego Central Library. This dynamic gathering brought together more than 200 leaders from philanthropy, nonprofits, academia, media, and government to explore how strategic giving can shape a more equitable and prosperous border region. Developed in collaboration with borderlands expert Dr. Paul Ganster of San Diego State University, the Border Briefs offer data-driven insights across six key areas: Health, Environment, Education, Migration, Philanthropy, and Border Dynamics. Executive Director Andy Carey officially unveiled the series, emphasizing the importance of grounding border narratives in facts and opportunity. The event featured opening remarks by BPP Board Member Anabella Díaz Rivera Robinson Bours and a powerful panel discussion moderated by fellow board member Karina Jimenez Lewis, Associate Director of Policy Reform and Advocacy at the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Panelists included Casandra Hernández Faham, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation; Silvia Rivera, MacArthur Foundation; and Dr. Emily Young, Conrad Prebys Foundation. Moderated by BPP Board Member Denise Herrera, the conversation gathered more than 40 philanthropic leaders committed to advancing equity and opportunity in the U.S.-Mexico border region. Participants reflected on the insights shared during the previous evening’s event and explored practical ways to apply the Border Briefs in their grantmaking strategies. Funders also shared their aspirations for greater alignment and collective impact across the region.

The launch took place at the North American Development Bank (NADBank) in San Antonio, Texas, as part of the event Voices and Visions from the Border: A Data Driven Dialogue. Sponsored by NADBank and Arca Continental Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages, the initiative also seeks to provide stakeholders with reliable information to help attract vital resources to border communities. In Memory of Pope Francis. It is with deep respect and heartfelt reflection that the U.S.-Mexico Border Philanthropy Partnership joins the world in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, a global spiritual leader whose legacy will forever resonate with those dedicated to justice, dignity, and human compassion. Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis was a steadfast advocate for the most vulnerable among us—particularly migrants, the poor, the sick, and the excluded. His message was clear: the border is not a place of division, but a space of human encounter. Nowhere was this more powerfully expressed than during his historic 2016 visit to the U.S.-Mexico border in Ciudad Juárez, where he stood in solidarity with migrant families and offered prayers for those who had lost their lives seeking hope and safety. Pope Francis reminded us that migration is not just a political issue—it is a moral one, grounded in our shared responsibility to protect human dignity. His teachings aligned deeply with the mission of BPP, reinforcing the vital importance of our workIn his memory, we recommit ourselves to these values, inspired by his courage, humility, and unwavering call for solidarity across borders. May his legacy continue to light the path toward a more just and compassionate world.

Deliberate & Steadfast: Building Community Resilience with Karina Jiménez Lewis. 2025 just started, and it has already been a rough year. Uncertainty, chaos, destruction, and pain surround us, and more is sure to come. As people who labor in the philanthropic sector, it is our job to be of the highest service to the people and communities we support. To do that well, we need to have our feet planted on the ground, our hands interlocked with our communities, and our eyes and minds across the past, present, and future. I am interviewing Black women from Latin America and the Caribbean to help me do just that. First, Karina Jiménez Lewis from The Annie E. Casey Foundation. Jonathan: We are living through devastating times for our country, our democracy, and our communities worldwide.
