REPORTS

Beyond Borders: Observations for US organizations considering nonprofit incorporation in Mexico (February, 2010) | In 2009, with the support of an Inter-American Foundation planning grant, BPP leadership commissioned a study to devise the best course of action for the partnership’s incorporation in Mexico as an Asociación Civil and Donataria Autorizada (the equivalent of a nonprofit organization with tax deductible status in the US). Through this process, BPP leadership become acutely aware of the unique challenges nonprofits that operate on both sides of the border, or that wish to do so, face when establishing a legal presence in Mexico. The lack of understanding and information available to help binational nonprofits establish themselves on both sides become equally apparent. As a result, the BPP collected its learnings and observations in Beyond Borders: Observations for US organizations considering nonprofit incorporation in Mexico, a report that helps fill an important vacuum in our sector and one which we are pleased to now share with the border's nonprofit and philanthropic community.

Reflections on Cross-Cultural Collaboration: Lessons from US-Mexico Border Philanthropy (October, 2010) | The BPP, through the experience of our members on the ground has observed that effective cross-border and cross-cultural collaboration is greatly enhanced by six core principles.  This brief highlights these principles and offers two cases of BPP member organizations advancing cross-border collaboration in different regions of the border.

DeBunking Myths (October, 2010) | This report is part of, and the first offering of the BPP's Quality of Life Indicator Project. This long-term project creates, collects and synthesizes data that tells a more accurate story of the border region, from a binational perspective and through the lens of civil society. Building on pre-existing data, Debunking Myths takes a closer look at four common myths about the border and presents researched findings that offer a more accurate understanding of life in the border region.

The Balancing Act in Spanish (August, 2009) | Published by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation in November 2008, The Balancing Act is a series of three monographs authored by Dorothy 'Dottie' Reynolds that explores the core functions of a community foundation as a grantmaker, a vehicle for local philanthropy and a community leader. Recently the BPP teamed up with the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation to make available the Spanish translation of the monographs for the benefit of our community foundation and community philanthropy peers and colleagues across Mexico and Latin America. WEBCASTS

In Kind Donations: Guide to Mexico | The BPP along with the International Community Foundation (ICF), Fundación Internacional de la Comunidad (FIC)and the Office of Federal Congressman, Baja California Lic. Carlos Torres Torres hosted a webinar on in-kind cross-border donations to Mexico. The webinar covered the recommendations included in 'In-kind Donations Guide to Mexico; A Guide for In-kind Donations to Mexico through Nongovernmental Organizations’ and offered donors and recipient agencies alike an opportunity to share pressing questions and concerns with regards to in-kind cross-border donations. The guide was co-produced by the ICF,FIC,and the Office of Congressman Carlos Torres Torres in recognition of the lack of understanding that most donors and recipient organizations have about in-kind donations. The intent was to help those donors who want to give items to Mexico while also being in compliance with Mexican law and to facilitate the transfer of these gifts by educating Mexican nonprofit organizations on the process of ‘firma electronica’ (a new electronic approval process for the importation of donated goods).
