Community Foundation Leadership: Catalyzing Partnerships for Change
V Learning Community Notes and Resources
October 27-29, 2004
Tucson , Arizona

THE ISSUES:
Community foundations are much more than grantmaking institutions. Truly
effective community foundations play critical leadership roles in local
areas. A community foundation holds unique insights into community issues,
is a neutral convener and bridge-builder across social divides and has
access to a wide range of financial and human resources. Community foundations
can mobilize individuals and institutions around especially serious,
unattended or emerging community issues. Over the past quarter century,
community foundations have grown most rapidly in communities marked by
persistent and growing ethnic and/or social divisions, both in the U.S.
and internationally. Such challenging social divides make community foundation
leadership more necessary than ever – and call for us to create
new models for and tools of leadership. The V Learning Community of
the Border Philanthropy Partnership provided an opportunity to address
the “whys” and “hows” of border community foundation
leadership for the 21 st century.
QUESTIONS ADDRESSED:
- What are the unique characteristics of community foundations
that have been successful community leaders?
- Why should border community foundations emphasize their leadership
role – especially in the 21 st century?
- How do community foundations at different levels of organizational
development exercise their leadership role in border communities?
- What roles can Board members play to create successful community foundation
leadership?
- How can border community foundations collectively make a difference
around an important border issue?
