BPP LEARNING COMMUNITIES
The Role of Community in Community Foundations: Second Learning Community
April 9-11, 2003 - San Diego, California
THE ISSUES:
Strengthening border communities will take place when local people are
committed to investing their time, talent and resources in the effort.
Community development based on the capacities, skills and assets of the
people in the community will help us arrive at the quality of life change
the Border Philanthropy Partnership seeks. But how do we make that happen?
How will we improve quality of life in border communities and what role
should communities themselves play in that process? In this 2nd learning
community we fostered discussions among partners, presented cases of
programs that are working and called upon experts in the field to help
us address these pressing issues.
Questions Addressed:
- What is the role of "community" in Border Community Foundations,
and how is that role unique among foundations?
- What tools can community foundations use to balance grant-making, resource
development and community engagement?
- What is the value of strategic grant-making and how are Border Community
Foundations (BCF) using strategic grant-making to "make a difference"?
- How can Board members be most effective in making their foundations strong
community leaders?
