MEETING OBJECTIVES:
- To provide participants with an understanding of the broad continuum
of community foundation youth engagement activities
- To provide participants with concrete “take-homes” – practical
suggestions and time for action planning for youth engagement activities
that can fit a range of community foundation organizational, cultural
and institutional contexts.

Partnership welcomed participants
Karen Yarza, Executive Director of Fundación Comunitaria de la
Frontera Norte introduced Barbara Oates from Community Foundations of Canada and Laura Beavers for KIDS COUNT
WHY YOUTH? Honored Keynote Speaker Barbara Oates, National Consultant
on Youth Philanthropy, Community Foundations of Canada will answer the
question: “Why invest in youth?” Barbara will help participants
examine the advantages and challenges community foundations face when
investing in youth. Barbara will also encourage meeting participants
to start thinking about existing youth investment models from around
the globe, and what can be learned from these. Click here for notes and

WHY BORDER YOUTH? Laura Beavers, KIDS COUNT, Annie E. Casey Foundation,
will provide perspective on the status of border youth from data compiled
by KIDS COUNT from both Mexican and US border communities.

Learning from Action: Proven Border Community Foundation Best Practices
for Investing in Youth
Enrique Suarez, board member of Fundación Comunitaria de la Frontera
Norte and Veronica Salcido-Harding, New Mexico Community Foundation shared
with border colleagues community foundation success stories and lessons
learned in supporting, engaging and investing in youth.
4:00-5:30pm
Tools and Best Practice – Simultaneous Break out sessions
Raising Permanent Funds for Youth Engagement with Barbara Oates: A sneak
preview of stories from around the world that Community Foundations of
Canada has been collecting on development efforts related to youth work.
The session was results-oriented, and included successful stories
from our own border community foundations.
What Border Community Foundation Board and Staff Need to Know about Working
with and Mentoring Youth: Co-lead by Fred Gomez of Santa Cruz Community
Foundation, and Teresa Almada, a youth expert from Ciudad Juarez who
works with FCFN, this session provided concrete tips on effective
practices for engaging youth in your community foundation.
What Border Youth Seek from their Border Community Foundation Partners: A “youth only” peer learning and focus group, answering the
question, “ What kind of support do border youth need from their
local community foundations to be more involved in community issues that
affect youth?” Interactive session with a group of bi-national
youth participants and Irene Oliver, board member of New Mexico Community
Foundation.
Focusing on Youth Assets: How Community Foundations Can Measure the Success
of Their Work to Engage Youth.
Derek Petersen, founder of the Institute for Community and Adolescent
Resilience, leads a session based on the Search Institute’s framework
of 40 developmental assets for youth. The interactive session demonstrated
how youth engagement and youth philanthropy work results in improving
a number of these assets, which reflect positive experiences, relationships,
opportunities, and personal qualities that young people need to grow
up healthy, caring, and responsible citizens.

Interactive Planning Session; Commitment to Youth in Your Community!
What is your community foundation’s vision around youth? What
steps will you take? What resources do you need? Participants worked
in pairs and then in small groups to identify next steps for youth engagement
within their communities and received feedback from their peers in
a “Real Time Consulting” session. Small groups were facilitated
by Youth Advisory Committee members.

have achieved in Cd. Juarez
